Statement on Belize’s ratification of Escazu Agreement | 27 February 2023

The United Nations commends the Government of Belize for ratifying the landmark Escazu Agreement.

With the deposit of the instrument of ratification for the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean (Escazu Agreement) at UN headquarters in New York, the Government of Belize formally joins the region’s first environmental treaty. The ratification of the Escazu Agreement bodes well for Belize’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2030 as it will deepen environmental governance in accordance with the protection of human rights in the country. The Escazu Agreement ensures that the right of every person, of present and future generations to a healthy and sustainable environment.  

“This important regional treaty catalyzes action for people and planet and focuses on broad participation in national environmental agendas and decision-making processes to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs” said Birgit Gerstenberg, UN Resident Coordinator in Belize. “Having become a Party to the Escazu Agreement, Belize is taking bold action in favor of its people and cementing its environmental and natural resource leadership in Central America and the Caribbean.”  Furthermore, “the ratification will give support to the work of environmental human rights defenders, underscoring their legitimate role in pursuing a healthy environment for all.  It also opens significant avenues for collaboration with other regional and extra-regional stakeholders,” explains Alberto Brunori, Representative of UN Human Rights for Central America and the Caribbean.

The UN system and UN Human Rights stand ready to support Belize in the implementation of the provisions of this treaty.

Declaración sobre la ratificación por parte de Belice del Acuerdo de Escazú | 27 de febrero de 2023

Las Naciones Unidas felicitan al Gobierno de Belice por ratificar el histórico Acuerdo de Escazú.

Con el depósito en la sede de las Naciones Unidas en Nueva York del instrumento de ratificación del Acuerdo Regional sobre el Acuerdo Regional sobre el Acceso a la Información, la Participación Pública y el Acceso a la Justicia en Asuntos Ambientales en América Latina y el Caribe (Acuerdo de Escazú), el Gobierno de Belice se suma formalmente a este primer tratado ambiental en la región. Con el objetivo de garantizar a todas las personas, de las generaciones presentes y futuras, el derecho a vivir en un medio ambiente sano y al desarrollo sostenible a través de la participación, la transparencia y la rendición de cuentas, la ratificación del Acuerdo de Escazú favorece el compromiso de Belice con los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible y la Agenda 2030 ya que profundizará la gobernanza ambiental en conformidad con la protección de los derechos humanos en el país.

“Este importante tratado regional cataliza la acción para las personas y el planeta, centrándose en una amplia participación en las agendas ambientales nacionales y los procesos de toma de decisiones que aceleran el logro de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible,” dijo Birgit Gerstenberg, Coordinadora Residente de la ONU en Belice. “Habiéndose convertido en parte del Acuerdo de Escazú, Belice está tomando medidas audaces a favor de sus habitantes y consolidando su liderazgo ambiental y de recursos naturales en América Central y el Caribe”. Asimismo, Alberto Brunori, Representante de ONU Derechos Humanos para América Central y el Caribe, afirmó que “la ratificación apoyará el trabajo de las personas defensoras de derechos humanos ambientales, subrayando su papel legítimo en la búsqueda de un medio ambiente saludable para todas y todos. También abre vías importantes para la colaboración con otras partes interesadas regionales y extrarregionales”.

El sistema de Naciones Unidas y ONU Derechos Humanos están listos para apoyar a Belice en la implementación de las disposiciones de este tratado.
